In the seemingly calm world of seven-year-old Joachim, reality blends with imagination. He grows up in an unusual setting – a grand villa located within a psychiatric clinic for children and adolescents, where his father serves as director. For Joachim, the patients are part of everyday life, more like companions than strangers. Among them, he feels freer than in the company of the “normal” people outside. While his father embraces this enclosed world with ease, his mother increasingly feels its emotional weight. Nostalgia for her youth and a longing for a different life begin to disrupt the family's fragile balance. Based on the autobiographical novel by Joachim Meyerhoff, the film offers a tender portrait of a childhood shaped by contrasts, where joy and melancholy go hand in hand.
