František Skála’s Public Space / Summer Cinema

We’re serving up the ninth edition of the Pragovka Summer Cinema, this year under the overarching theme Mutual Benefits. Screenings will take place every Tuesday after dark in the MaxSpace hall, behind Permanent Beer Fest.

Admission is free (voluntary contributions are welcome). Before the screening begins, you can visit Pragovka Gallery, which will stay open later especially for the occasion. Refreshments will be provided by Permanent Beer Fest.

On 1 September at 8:00 PM, we will screen František Skála’s Public Space.

A playful journey through public space with František Skála, one of the Czech Republic’s most versatile artists, offers a chance to see the world from a different perspective. With humour, seriousness and self-irony, the artist, performer and musician gives us a rare glimpse through many imaginary doors, revealing beauty in imperfection, poetry in the ordinary, traces of human hands in the passage of time, and the joy of creation as a way of life.

Skála’s creative energy can also be felt in the making of his monumental dog sculpture Vulpes Gott, from the creation of the model to its journey by boat along the Elbe to an exhibition opening in Dresden. The film interweaves the artist’s diaries with his works in public spaces, including his first sculpture in the grounds of Veltrusy Chateau, Prastánek, and Rajská zahrada at Sluňákov.

The film also features František Skála’s friends, the band Třaskavá směs, the brass band Provodovjané, and philosopher Miroslav Petříček. Skála’s Renaissance-like versatility is also well known from Divadlo Sklep, the Tvrdohlaví art group, Tros Sketos, and M.T.O. Universal.
